Private Wave Rock & Mulka's Cave day tour

This private day takes your group from your Perth hotel to Wave Rock, Hippo's Yawn and Mulka's Cave in an air-conditioned vehicle with your own driver-guide. It is the pick for families and small groups, because one price covers up to nine people and the vehicle is yours alone.

Private Wave Rock & Mulka's Cave Day Tour

About this experience

Wave Rock is a long way out: about 340 km by road from Perth, just east of the Wheatbelt town of Hyden. On this tour the whole vehicle is yours. The listing caps the group at nine, picks you up at your hotel and drops you back there in the evening, about 12 hours later. A guest names the operator as Perth Short Stay Tour and praises the driver-guide as patient and safe on the long road.

The drive out follows the listing's itinerary: about 1.5 hours, a 30-minute break, another hour, then a photo stop at the Dog Cemetery near Corrigin, where farmers have buried their dogs since 1974. In spring the road runs past wildflowers and yellow canola, and guests say the guide stops for pictures. At Hyden you get a traditional Aussie BBQ sausage sizzle, with kangaroo sausage on offer if you want to try it. Then about 1.5 hours at Wave Rock, ten minutes at Hippo's Yawn, and 20 minutes at Mulka's Cave, where the listing says there are more than 425 Aboriginal rock paintings estimated to be 2,000 to 3,000 years old. Your guide tells the legend of Mulka there.

The price is per group, not per person. That is the reason to book it. For a family of five or a group of friends it lands close to the coach fare each, and you get your own timing, your own questions answered and the window seat every time. Admissions to Wave Rock, Hippo's Yawn and Mulka's Cave are included. It is a new listing with three reviews so far, all five stars, and free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

★★★★★

We enjoyed this tour very much. Even though it was a long journey, we had stop overs to take pictures of the beautiful wild flowers and canola fields. Tips before you book

  • Work out the price per head before you compare. One price covers the whole vehicle, so five or six people sharing changes the sums a lot.
  • Bring a hat, sunscreen, water and comfortable shoes, as the listing asks. It also suggests biodegradable sunscreen and insect repellent.
  • Ask about kangaroo sausage at the sizzle if you are curious. It is optional, so nobody has to.
  • Mulka's Cave is a protected Aboriginal site. Look and photograph, but do not touch the art. The Mulka's Cave guide explains why it matters.
  • Extra drinks are not included. Carry some cash or a card for coffee and snacks on the way.
