Wave Rock to Esperance 6-day tour

This six-day minibus trip leaves Perth for York and Wave Rock on day one, then loops along the south coast through Fitzgerald River, Lucky Bay, Albany and Margaret River, camping in swags. It suits travellers who want Wave Rock as the opening act of a bigger Western Australia trip rather than a long day there and back.

Margaret River to Esperance 6-Day Tour

About this experience

Most Wave Rock trips are a single long day from Perth. This one keeps going. Day one leaves Perth early for York, the oldest inland town in Western Australia, then Wave Rock near Hyden, then south-east into Fitzgerald River National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, to camp at Four Mile Campground. Day two climbs East Mount Barren, then reaches Esperance for a Dabungool Cultural Experience with Wudjari Nyungar guides on seasons, bush foods and traditions. That night you camp at Lucky Bay in Cape Le Grand National Park, where kangaroos lounge on the white sand.

Day three is Cape Le Grand at your own pace, with sunrise on the beach and a climb of Frenchman Peak. Day four runs back through Esperance and Ravensthorpe to Bremer Bay and Tozer's Bush Camp. Day five heads west through Albany to William Bay National Park for Greens Pool and Elephant Rocks, then the Dave Evans Bicentennial Tree in the karri forest, and a night at Hamelin Bay. Day six walks part of the Cape to Cape Track, visits Margaret River for two tastings of local wine and produce, and finishes at Busselton Jetty before the drive back to Perth that evening.

It is a real outdoor trip. You sleep in swags on five nights, and the listing asks guests to help with meals and packing up camp. Walks run 3 to 12 km on some days, and it is not suitable for children under 12 or people with low fitness. In return, almost everything is covered: park and entry fees, all activities, five breakfasts, one lunch and five dinners, the minibus and the guide. Guests rate it 4.7 from 35 reviews and keep praising the guides' cooking. Free cancellation runs up to 7 days before.

What guests say

★★★★★

I would highly recommend this tour to Esperance. There was only 4 of us on the tour and it was so lovely to get to meet and know the other 3 solo travelers on the tour with me. Sean our guide was amazing! He was so informative and told us a lot about the history of areas we visited and the native wildlife and fauna. [...] It was so much fun camping (especially considering I have never camped in my life!)

Tips before you book

  • Pack a sleeping bag and a pillow. Neither is supplied, and the listing also asks for a towel, a torch, a power bank and a reusable water bottle.
  • Budget for drinks. They are not included, and the Margaret River tastings are the only ones on the plan.
  • Get to the Beaufort St tourist bus stop, near the corner of James Street Mall, under your own steam. There is no hotel pickup.
  • Expect to pitch in. The listing asks guests to help with meals and packing up camp, and guests say the shared cooking is half the fun.
  • Book with time to spare: free cancellation on this one closes 7 days before departure, not 24 hours.
