Booking choice: The Wave Rock coach day tour, from $188 per person. Check dates Tour details

Wave Rock sits just east of Hyden, about 340 km from Perth by road. That is roughly four hours each way, which is why most visitors let someone else do the driving. The question is less whether a tour exists and more which kind fits your trip.

Here are the four bookable tours side by side: what each includes, how long you get at the rock, and the type of traveller each one suits best.

The quick answer

Yes. The cheapest and most popular is the coach day tour with York, Hippo's Yawn, lunch, Wave Rock and Mulka's Cave, from US$188 for about 12.5 hours. A private car for up to nine people costs from US$867 per group. A scenic flight from Jandakot gets you there in about an hour and back by noon, from US$714 per person. With six days, a camping loop visits Wave Rock on day one on the way to Esperance.

Are there any tours to Wave Rock from Perth?

Yes. Four tours from Perth include Wave Rock: a coach day, a private day, a fly-in half day and a six-day loop to the south coast.

All four run from Perth and all four come with free cancellation, which matters on a trip this long: you can lock in a date and still change your mind. Three of them cancel free up to 24 hours before; the six-day loop needs 7 days' notice. The table puts the essentials side by side. Prices are the listings' from-prices in US dollars for 2026.

What does the Wave Rock coach day tour include?

Coach transport from selected Perth CBD hotels, a country-style lunch, live commentary and the entry fees to all attractions, for about 12.5 hours.

The day runs through the Perth Hills to York, the first town founded in the Avon Valley, with free time for a coffee. From there the coach heads east through Corrigin and Kondinin, past the Dog Cemetery, to Hippo's Yawn. Lunch is at the Wildflower Shoppe and Cafe in Hyden. After lunch you pick one of three: the wildlife park, the antique lace collection or the Toy Soldier Museum. Then comes Wave Rock itself, and Mulka's Cave with the legend of Mulka on the way out.

The listing says it is likely to sell out, and asks you to give dietary needs when you book. Guests are clear about the trade-off: "A long trip from Perth so very glad I got the bus!" (Michelle, Oct 2026). Another put it simply: "A long day but worth every minute" (Becky, Aug 2026).

How much time do you get at Wave Rock on a tour?

The private tour allows about 1.5 hours at Wave Rock itself, and the flight's ground tour runs about 1.5 hours, plus an optional hour in Hyden. The coach listing gives no exact time at the rock; guests say the stops felt well paced.

The private tour's itinerary is the most precise: about 1.5 hours at Wave Rock, 10 minutes at Hippo's Yawn and 20 minutes at Mulka's Cave. The fly-in tour lands you at the rock by about 8:30am, guides you around Wave Rock and Hippo's Yawn until about 10:00, then leaves an hour for the wildlife park, the Toy Museum or a coffee before the 11:00 flight home. The coach day spreads its afternoon across lunch, one of the Hyden attractions, Wave Rock and Mulka's Cave.

That is enough for most people. The rock itself takes one to two hours to walk and photograph, and the main loop to Hippo's Yawn is about 1 km. If you want The Humps trails, Lake Magic at sunrise and a float in the salt pool as well, you need a night in Hyden. Our walks guide has the trail lengths.

Hippo's Yawn is about 1 km from Wave Rock, and every Wave Rock day tour stops there.

Is a private Wave Rock tour worth it?

For a group of four or more, often yes: one price of US$867 covers up to nine people, with hotel pickup, lunch and admissions included.

The private day tour runs in an air-conditioned vehicle with your own driver-guide. It stops at the Dog Cemetery, serves an Aussie BBQ sausage sizzle in Hyden (kangaroo sausage optional), then visits Wave Rock, Hippo's Yawn and Mulka's Cave. Admission to all three is included. Extra drinks and personal spending are not.

The maths changes with your group. Split nine ways, the group price comes to under US$100 each. It is a new listing with three reviews so far, all five stars. One guest names the operator as Perth Short Stay Tour and liked the pace: "we had stop overs to take pictures of the beautiful wild flowers and canola fields" (Nancy, Aug 2026).

Your own driver-guide from your Perth hotel to Wave Rock and Mulka's Cave, one price for up to nine, free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

Can you fly to Wave Rock from Perth?

Yes. The scenic flight leaves Jandakot Airport at 7:30am, flies about an hour to the Wave Rock airstrip and has you back in Perth around 12:00.

The scenic flight and ground tour meets at 4 Baron Way, Jandakot. Your guide drives you from the airstrip to Wave Rock and Hippo's Yawn, and you reach the rock early, before the day coaches arrive. Morning tea is at your own cost. A minimum of two adults is needed, and the listing says it does not suit people afraid of heights or over 120 kg. Afternoon tours are available on request.

It has one review so far, and it is glowing. The guest names Liam from Kookaburra Air as pilot, driver and guide, and says the flight showed "endless green and yellow fields, colorful water reservoirs, and forests from above, saving us the long drive through the outback" (Anette, Aug 2026).

Can you see Wave Rock on a multi-day tour?

Yes. The six-day Margaret River to Esperance tour visits York and Wave Rock on day one, then heads to Fitzgerald River National Park and the south coast.

The 6-day tour starts at the Beaufort Street tourist bus stop near James Street Mall. After Wave Rock you camp at Four Mile Campground in Fitzgerald River National Park. Day two climbs East Mount Barren, meets Wudjari Nyungar guides for a Dabungool cultural experience in Esperance, and ends at Lucky Bay. Day three is Cape Le Grand and Frenchman Peak. The listing's highlights add Albany's coast, Margaret River and a stretch of the Cape-to-Cape Track.

Park fees, activities, 5 breakfasts, 1 lunch, 5 dinners and five nights of swag camping are included. Bring your own sleeping bag; there is no hotel pickup. Guests help with meals and packing up camp, walks run 3 to 12 km on some days, and it is not for children under 12. One guest summed it up: "There is a lot of driving but Sean broke it up nicely" (Laura Ann, Nov 2024).

Which Wave Rock tour should I choose?

Pick the coach for value, the private car for a group, the flight for time, and the six-day loop if you were heading south anyway.

  • The coach day tour if you travel solo or as a couple and want the most stops for the money. It adds free time in York, a sit-down country lunch and a Hyden attraction.
  • The private tour if you are four to nine people, travel with children or older parents, or want to stop when you like.
  • The scenic flight if you have half a day, hate long drives or want the Wheatbelt from above. It skips York and Mulka's Cave.
  • The six-day loop if you are fit, like camping and want Esperance's beaches too.

One thing to know: the wildflower discovery tour is a spring day out from Perth that does not go to Wave Rock. It suits you if the bloom matters more than the rock.

Not sure yet? Reserve the coach day now and keep your options open: free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

What should you bring on a Wave Rock day tour?

Comfortable walking shoes, a hat, a camera, water and sunscreen. Add insect repellent from spring onwards.

The listings ask for the same short kit: shoes you can walk granite in, a hat and a camera, and the private tour adds biodegradable sunscreen and insect repellent. Wave Rock Management's travel advice adds long sleeves and plenty of water, and warns about flies in the warmer months. A fly net weighs nothing and saves your patience.

Pack layers in winter. The day starts and ends in the dark for part of the year, and Wheatbelt mornings can be cold even when the afternoon is warm. For month-by-month weather and the spring wildflowers, see our guide to whether Wave Rock is worth it.
